I'm pretty sure that Lowe Stokes & 7-Foot played this one in C. Not sure if they're all on this particular side but the band often played with another fiddler, Harry Kiker, bowed bass (Pink Lindsay) & tenor banjo (Shorty Lindsay). What a grand sound!
I suspect the A version came from a West Coast fiddler (will have to check CDs for his name) who played on one of the Clifftop recordings in the 90s. It's got that nice smooth but bouncy sound but the "A" atmosphere gives it quite a different flavor from the C original.

Yes, Lowe Stokes did play it in C with Dilly's band. But the version that revived its popularity at the jams I attend was by Barry Schultz, who played it in A on the Old Time Music on the Air, Vol. 2 CD. Alas, its hard to get some folks to play much in C these days. I'd like to do more of it.
